Jim McAuslan has become an SBA Associate after fourteen years as CEO and General Secretary of the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA). He worked there with consultants Simon Barrow and Jenny Davenport to improve relationships within several airlines where he saw the need for change. These included First Choice and Thomson (later covering their merger), British Airways, CitiExpress, Monarch, GB Airways and British Midland (BMI).
At BALPA he established positive relationships with airline CEOs during M&A, restructures and other radical change, became a mature contributor to public debate on industry issues, doubled cash reserves and earned the trust of 9,000 flight crew. Fund Managers and analysts now seek BALPA’s views on airline people management.
Chris Browne, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet, had this reaction to Jim’s move:
“Jim McAuslan is an employer brand adviser to his fingertips and has the great knack of identifying not just the issues and the logjams but finding a way through a problem. He’ll bring reality, innovation and judgement to any management team just as he’s been doing for years in BALPA.”
Jim is a respected guide on people management and leadership issues whether or not a union is involved. He has advised the Duke of Edinburgh Commonwealth Leadership Programme, The Fabian commission on Taxation and Citizenship and the Good Work Commission. He grew up in Ayrshire in a family of farmers, deep sea engineers and customs officers. After leaving school at 18 he became a tax collector and was then selected as a Civil Service fast stream candidate.
